2009 the OECD published “The Bioeconomy to 2030” report which highlights the long-term economic and environmental sustainability the bioeconomy could generate for OECD and non-OECD countries. In the report, they also strengthened the role of biotechnology for the bioeconomy and how the bioeconomy could improve health outcomes, boost the productivity of agriculture and industrial processes, and enhance environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, the report also warned that the bioeconomy’s success is not guaranteed and that harnessing its potential will require coordinated policy action by governments to reap its benefits.
