Circularity with recycled and biogenic resources

Grant by the VolkswagenStiftung

(Primary) Raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce. Their extraction and processing place an excessive burden on the earth through greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss and water consumption. In view of a high resource consumption in (post-)industrial societies, there is a broad societal consensus that a transformation towards a significantly reduced resource footprint is an urgent matter. With this goal, recycled and biogenic materials are of great importance.

What is funded?

The funding line ‘Collaborative projects’ of this initiative is primarily targeted at the natural sciences and engineering. Interdisciplinary project teams of two to three applicants can get support for original and practice-relevant research on closing resource-product cycles. Topics for funding include bio-inspired material design, microbial and molecular conversion, valorization of complex waste streams, and recycling-friendly product design. Amount of funding: up to 1.2 million Euro for 4 years.

A second funding line for ‘Practice transfer‘ is in preparation. Presumably, by the end of 2023 further details on this call will be announced.
