Initiated in 2002, the Stem Cell Network North Rhine-Westphalia – a nonprofit association permanently funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) – has since gained national and international standing. Scientists from more than 80 research institutes at different universities, university hospitals, and non-university research institutions in NRW are engaged in the network.
The focus lies on promoting junior scientists, translating research results into biomedical applications, addressing ethical, legal, and social-scientific implications of stem cell research and the dialogue with society. The interdisciplinary approach has always been a characteristic of the network and is crucial for a well-informed dialogue about stem cell research, especially in view of the high expectations placed on it.
