Retrospective: Discover the biotechnology hotspots Singapore and Malaysia
On February 13, a fascinating window opened into the world of the biotechnology centers Singapore and Malaysia. An informative and exciting webinar not only provided in-depth insights into these emerging markets, but also gave practical tips for companies considering expansion into these dynamic regions.
One highlight was the presentation by Tara Méité (Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry), who presented Malaysia’s ambitious “National Biotechnology Policy 2.0”. With a focus on agricultural biotechnology and food safety, biotechnology in the healthcare sector, industrial biotechnology and the circular economy, the Malaysian government is pursuing ambitious goals. By 2030, biotechnology companies are expected to generate 5% of the gross domestic product (GDP) – an ambitious plan that was supported by the listing of numerous local young biotech companies in these areas. MIDA (Malaysian Investment Development Authority) also outlined the funding opportunities for foreign investors, including impressive incentives such as up to 25 years of tax advantages for new investments.
Singapore’s biotechnology sector was also impressive: Dlyal Harris (Singaporean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry) painted a compelling picture of the city-state’s astonishing development as a biotechnology hub in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. The RIE25 plan, which invests 1% of GDP (25 billion, Singapore Dollar) in science and technology between 2021 and 2025, is catapulting Singapore to the forefront of the biotechnology world. Today, the city-state is home to numerous biotech and pharmaceutical companies that are not only active in research and development, but also in production and clinical trials.
However, the webinar was not just a retrospective, but a stepping stone into the future: the planned delegation trip of the biotechnology industry to Singapore and Malaysia in September 2025 was presented. Organized by NRW.Global Business in collaboration with BIO.NRW and BIO Clustermanagement NRW GmbH, this trip offers an invaluable opportunity to make new business contacts and participate in the renowned Asia Bio Partnering Forum. A big thank you goes to all speakers and participants who made this event such an inspiring experience. With lively discussions and valuable insights, the foundation was laid for future partnerships in the vibrant markets of Singapore and Malaysia.
