Pioneers from NRW – Dr. Bert Klebl, Lead Discovery Center
“It’s a match: Tindering Academia with Pharma”
Dr. Klebl is the initiator, as well as executive and scientific director of the Lead Discovery Center (LDC). Focusing on small molecules, the LDC conducts drug discovery projects originating primarily from academic groups and sustains a preferred partnership with the Max Planck Society. In close collaboration with high-profile partners from academia and industry, the LDC is building a strong and growing portfolio of small molecule leads with exceptional medical and commercial potential.
LDC was established in 2008 by the technology transfer organization Max Planck Innovation, as a novel approach to capitalize on the potential of excellent basic research for the discovery of new therapies for diseases with high medical need.
Dr. Klebl has also initiated the technology transfer fund KHAN-I. The fund is a financing vehicle for the translation of excellent basic research into professional drug development and commercialization. The fund has a close partnership with the LDC and is managed by Kahnu Management GmbH in Dortmund. Dr. Klebl has been managing director there since 2019.
