BIO-Europe 2024: Networking, Knowledge Exchange, and Biotechnology’s Vision for the Future

The 30th BIO-Europe event provided a platform for networking, knowledge transfer and the exchange of ideas on the future of biotechnology.
Held in Stockholm at the beginning of November, the event brought together the international biotechnology and life science community, despite the challenges posed by geopolitical tensions and economic difficulties. The conference commenced with an inspiring review of its origins and subsequent development by Claire Macht, Director of the European Portfolio at EBD, and Carola Schropp, founder of BIO-Europe.

The opening ceremony was attended by Ebba Busch, Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Industry, who added a personal touch to proceedings. She linked her professional responsibilities to her strong personal connection to the industry, citing her hometown of Uppsala, a major centre for biotechnology, as an example. Ms Busch highlighted Sweden’s reputation for innovation and the social responsibility inherent in the biotechnology sector. The overarching message of the opening speeches was that biotechnology is not only a driver of technological progress, but also an industry that is committed to resilience and the well-being of society.

Partnerships are the foundation of biotechnology innovation
This was a key theme at BIO-Europe, where the event’s proven partnering system was a major focus. It is crucial for start-ups and SMEs to build valuable networks. However, in an increasingly competitive and economically challenging environment, identifying suitable partners is becoming increasingly challenging. Despite increasing competition from other platforms, BIO-Europe remains the industry leader with its unique partnering approach, offering an unparalleled space for exchange and business development.

The German Pavilion served as a central meeting point for German participants
This year, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection supported the German Pavilion, which offered a permanent point of contact for German players. As a “home base”, it enabled German bioregions, start-ups and SMEs to establish a robust international presence. We would like to thank EBD Group, Leipziger Messe International, the Federal Ministry and all other parties involved for their contribution to the creation of this platform.

Despite a limited scope for optimisation in the stand concept, the German Pavilion was a vibrant hub for exchange. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the German start-ups, SMEs and CROs were instrumental in making the conference a success, while also creating a positive and dynamic atmosphere.
